Basic Info
| Description | The Welsh Underground Festival was first established in 1980 to showcase emerging post-punk Welsh bands. One enthusiastic organiser in the early days was a pre-Hollywood schoolboy Rhys Ifans, although no event promoted by Ifans actually ever materialised. But he got it ! After 3 years the Festival had served it’s purpose, the bands went on to better things (from John Peel to Cool Cymru) and by the 90s of course Welsh music went firmly overground and stormed the Charts. So why bring it back in 2011 ? The digital age is a new DIY age. Politics needs to be back on stage. Welsh Culture is ready for another gear change. I got inspired by what Culture Colony are doing and hope that this event can link in with Culture Colony and that we can DIY and shift the agenda, push it slightly off-axis, stir it up again, confront, agitate, provoke, educate, inspire, challenge ....... The 2011 Welsh Underground Festival will be known as “The Sex Issue” (music will feature but it’s a Cultural Event not as music festival) Galeri in Caernarfon have given us a date of Saturday 14 May 2011 – we will need to confirm soon and announce line up This is the start of something – a new counter culture – Mick Jones (Clash) and Tony James (Generation X / Sigue Sigue Sputnik) want to be involved at some stage with one of our events – this is something we will work on for summer 2011. |
