Grand Slam for Bedwyr Williams

Grand Slam for Bedwyr Williams

6th August 2011

Bedwyr Williams has had a clean sweep this year at Y Lle Celf winning the Gold Medal for the Visual Arts, followed later in the week by the Ifor Davies Award and finally today, after the votes from members of the public who visited the exhibition were counted, Bedwyr also received 'The People's Choice' Award and £500.

There is no other institution in Wales that can equal Y Lle Celf's ability to truly interface between a general public and contemporary art. People visiting the Eisteddfod will look around Y Lle Celf, a very large proportion of these visitors will not go to another visual art exhibition throughout the year. This fact makes what is shown at Y Lle Celf highly significant and a very important place for artists works to be seen. Y Lle Celf can boast that the works selected for the show will be seen and discussed by people from all backgrounds, opinions will be formed and expressed outside of the 'contemporary art bubble'. This is very important.

And so, it goes without saying that to be choosen by 'The People' is a great acalade. And this year, by selecting a conceptual  and performance artist such as Bedwyr, this choice reflects back on the public who participated in the vote as a very healthy indication that our contemporary artists are on the right track and can bring a wider public with them who believe that "modern art" isn't all "rubbish!"

Llongyfarchiadau Bedwyr!

A very well-deserved win for Bedwyr (and Helen Sear who shared the first prize but didn't get a medal). Bedwyr's show Nimrod is currently at Oriel Davies in Newtown and should not be missed.

I agree. I popped in to see Nimrod at Oriel Davies and it is a great exhibition. The Bedwyr Williams Airport is classic. I'd also recommend buying the book "Bedwyr, I Think I Missed Your Performance" a real insight into the work and life of an international artist.

This is great news! Cant wait to see the show at Oriel Davies. Bedwyr is a really enjoyable and engaging artist. Ive read his other book and will most definetly have a look at "Bedwyr, I Think I Missed Your Performance"
Well done to Bedwyr for a really exciting year so far!
