Proposals that involve different disciplines and collaboration between artists on all the above commissions within one application will be encouraged.

Artists must also be aware that elements of this project will tour to other important Castles of Edward. For this there will be a modest transfer fee to cover costs

BACKGROUND AND LOCATION

The castles and fortified towns of Gwynedd are the finest examples of late 13th-century and early 14th-century military architecture in Europe. Their construction, begun in 1283 and at times hindered by the Welsh uprisings of Madoc ap Llewellyn in 1294, continued until 1330 in Caernarvon and 1331 in Beaumaris.

They have only undergone minimal restoration and provide, in their pristine state, a veritable repertory of medieval architectural forms: barbicans, drawbridges, fortified gates, chicanes, redoubts, dungeons, towers and curtain walls. Conwy is a wonderful example of this historical architecture and provides a stunning backdrop for the digital festival.

This colourful history provides the starting point for some very interesting artworks. Full details of the Cadw interpretation plans can be found at the following link: Interpretation Plans    See ” Castles of Edward I” and “Princes of Gwynedd” interpretation plans.

Conwy Castle and Town will be the focus of a new digital festival in October this year. The dates for this festival are the 22nd and 23rd of October. Artists should be mindful of the very tight schedule on application.

blinc is a festival celebrating all that is digital. In conjunction with Cadw and the Arts Council of Wales, the objective is to showcase artworks both in various site-specific locations and also culminating in a 3D projection on the castle walls on the Saturday evening.

blinc is a challenging and exciting proposition for artists across all genres. The Conwy Food Festival runs at the same time as this project attracting over twenty five thousand visitors. This is an excellent opportunity to get your work seen by a large audience.

blinc will be commissioning artists, artists-groups and creative technologists. The technology that is being used at the festival is usually only available to commercial enterprise due to his high expenditure. This festival will allow artists to utilise technology that is at the forefront of innovation. Access to the use of one or more 20,000 lumins high definition Lumiere projectors. This is a powerful 3D architectural mapping projection system, which will allow some of the artists work to be projected on a truly spectacular scale.

The Arts Council of Wales and CADW are collaborating on this project.

BRIEF

Using the ambiguity and the historic art reference of Magritte’s “This is not a Pipe”, we intend to start the whole process of selection and audience participation by attaching the same question to Conwy Castle and Town.

This question, although obviously a contradiction in itself poses many other questions and indeed answers, which will come from artists, residents and anyone who has knowledge of the site. By making such a statement we are encouraging the public and artists to think of the castle in a new and imaginative way.

The building has its history.

Everyone will be encouraged to participate prior to the event using blinc blog and SMS text Messaging. Artists will be commissioned. Some may choose to integrate or interpret these responses.

blinc poses the question, "What is Conwy to you?"

And for two days blinc will realise these reactions in various digital media using Conwy as a creative space
