FAO Prepare for a Journey
28th November 2009
FAO is a three person collaborative group founded in 2005 based in Swansea who formed after graduating from Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University in 2005 by members Fern Thomas, Adele Vye and Owen Griffiths. All prize winners from Welsh Artist of the Year, 2009.
Although their individual practices differ, their strategy of working and reasoning for creating work has allowed for a collaborative practice that brings together through cross pollination a fascinating and eclectic practice held together at its core by their shared social and environmental concerns. The three person collective focus on interactive and participatory art, often with an emphasis on environmental concerns.
Work can take the form of interactive actions and live events, through to drawing, photographically documented actions and discussion.

FAO make a big statement.

Fern Thomas. Adele Vye and Owen Griffiths are FAO

Fern and Owen shared the studio in Unit 2 at Aberystwyth arts Centre.

Part of Adele's installation in Unit 1. Two units make 1 pod.

FAO might be preparing for a journey, but something tells me Adele isn't quite ready to go. This is her den under the table. It looks very comfortable.

Owen and Fern are eating honey......

but I hope Adele dosen't swallow the compass - they might need it on the journey!

Adeles mind map. Very important to have a map when you set out on a journey. The connections that make the route's on this map are very interesting. 'Wales' isn't connected to 'Reality', but 'UFO's' are.

Postcards from Israel and Palestine dissappear as the salt crystals grow accross them. The images are mixed up so that you can't tell which postcards are from Israel and which are from Palestine. The salt unifies the cards as the images disappear.

A Hotel in Israel succumbs to the inevitable salination.

Adele and Fern read the tea leaves.

FAO make predictions from the tea leaves.

Owen's drawings of twigs with gold.

Fern's drawing of a river complimented the video that was playing on a loop in the studio. In slow motion, both sound and vision, Fern puts her head in the fast flowing Afon Dulas near Machynlleth to connect and communicate.

Adele's drawings, making ideas visible.

Flowers on a table and Fern's video behind.
