The second Culture Colony Intervention has now been installed in the Old Tannery - the sculpture gallery at MOMA Machynlleth.

Edwin Burdis' sculpture 'The Little Man - Y Dyn Bach' has left the building and made way for Eli Acheson-Elmassry's intervention in the space 'The Giant Everlasting Plait'. 

Made from cottons and satins dyed with tumeric the latest sculpture the Giant Everlasting Plait reaches up Rapunzel like into the high roof space of the gallery as the scents of essential oils such as sweet orange and frankincense fill the air. 

Visitors to the gallery are invited to come and sit down to add to the plait and make it longer and longer. Eli has asked that anyone taking material from the basket and continuing the plait to photograph themselves as they plait and then share on Twitter and Instagram by tagging the pictures and posts with #GiantEverlastingPlait .

The installation was conceived around the condition of bereavement, particularly the grief of children who lose their mothers. It is a conception of life's continuance, a contemplation of the conciousness of a woman who loves orange, the falling down of a plaited strand, the rising up of a flame, a sense of spirit without religious connotation, the creation of a meeting place of peace for all.

This sculpture is also dedicated to the memory of Tony Davidson (1928-2016) who worked for the British Council in many countries around the world and Eli has known since she was a young girl.

The plait will continue growing at MOMA Machynlleth until the 27th of May.

We have a number of interventions lined up for the following weeks including an exploration of the relationship between painting and sculpture in the work that Colin Williams will be installing.

And the work by ceramic artist Lisa Krigel, who won the Gold Medal for applied art at last years National Eisteddfod, will be disassembled and used in a feast (a limited number of tickets will be available to anyone who wants to participate in the feast - watch this space!).

Carmel George will be creating a performance in the space based on her experience of camping on her own in a secluded valley in the hills above Machynlleth in 2010.
