Gallery Talk in partnership with U3A Part of Oriel Myrddin’s 50+ programme

Thursday 6 July 2017, 11am  at Oriel Myrddin Gallery

An illustrated talk by  curator and lecturer Sally Moss about the work of Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) with particular reference to his love of Pembrokeshire (including estuaries at Sandy Haven, Porthclais and the Cleddau estuary at Picton. In 1934 Sutherland visited Pembrokeshire and was to return several times a year, “with one regrettable gap“, until a few months before his death. From the first moment he set foot in Wales he was “hooked and obsessed“. It was here that he discovered many of the ‘motifs’ and ways of looking that were to shape his future work – ‘laying up a storehouse’ to be referenced/ returned to time and again. Despite international acclaim he always maintained: “I wish I could give you some idea of the exultant strangeness of this place … It was in this country that I began to learn painting“.

Sgwrs Oriel mewn partneriaeth gyda U3A, rhan o rhaglen 50+ Oriel Myrddin

Dydd Iau 6 Gorffennaf 2017, 11am  yn Oriel Myrddin Gallery

Sgwrs  gan y Curadur a darlithydd Sally Moss  am waith Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) gan gyfeirio’n benodol at ei gariad at Sir Benfro (gan gynnwys aberoedd yn Sandy Haven, Porthclais ac aber Cleddau ar Picton. Ymwelodd Sutherland â Sir Benfro ym 1934 a bu’n dychwelyd sawl gwaith y flwyddyn, “gydag un bwlch anffodus”, tan ychydig fisoedd cyn ei farwolaeth. O’r eiliad cyntaf iddo osod troed yng Nghymru meddai ei fod “yn hooked and obsessed”. Yma y darganfu llawer o’r ‘motiffau’ a ffyrdd o edrych a oedd i lywio ei waith yn y dyfodol – ‘gosod i fyny stordy’ er mwyn cyfeirio atynt / dychwelyd at dro ar ôl tro. Er y clod rhyngwladol bu’n ei dderbyn, roedd o hyd yn mynnu: “I wish I could give you some idea of the exultant strangeness of this place … It was in this country that I began to learn painting“.
