Description

As part of its 56th anniversary celebrations, current and recently elected members of Grŵp 56 Cymru / 56 Group Wales are holding a major exhibition at Bay Art. Current members are: Ken Elias, Dennis Gardiner, Robert Harding, Clive Hicks-Jenkins, Carol Hiles, Harvey Hood, Sue Hunt, Robert Alwyn Hughes, Dilys Jackson, Justine Johnson, Glyn Jones, Martyn Jones, Alison Lochhead, Tom Piper, Richard Renshaw, Peter Seabourne, John Selway, Christopher Shurrock, Kevin Sinnott, Peter Spriggs, Antonia Spowers, Emrys Williams and Pete Williams.

The original Group was founded in 1956 by Eric Malthouse, David Tinker and Michael Edmonds to provide exhibiting opportunities for professional artists working in a progressive modern style. Perceived as radical, its character has, inevitably,  changed over the years. It has always fostered diversity and has included, overall, eighty-eight artists, many of whom have held influential positions in art schools.

The Bay Art exhibition of current members’ work coincides with the publication by Crooked Window of a richly illustrated book exploring the achievements and changing character of the Group over its remarkable fifty-six year history.

Work by the Group’s twelve founder members will be shown at Oriel y Bont, University of Glamorgan. Early works will also be included in an exhibition of post-war abstract art at National Museum Cardiff.
