Really excited to be releasing our new EP Pied Flycatcher on the 31 October - Here is a little info on the EP
“Gorgeous” -Folk Cast
Pied Flycatcher is singer-songwriter Kate's deeply-felt celebration of the wild beauty of the Welsh landscape.
In this three-song EP Kate Doubleday encourages us to experience the magic of nature. In the mesmerising title song, with its hypnotic arrangements, she evokes a journey of migration from west Wales to west Africa. Joined by the multi-talented Dan Wilkins on guitar and kora, and Marie Smith on lyrical cello, Kate sings of the bird's miraculous journey, incorporating the birds call “Tree tree, once more I come to thee” into the song.
In The Dunes, evoking a summers' day on the Ynyslas dunes, Kate reveals some of the mysteries of the landscape. Here we discover dancing sea campions (Silene maritima) and an ancient hidden forest in the sea, with the sound of the wind echoing from Doubleday's flute and reclaimed glass bottles.
Freefalling is a vulnerable and intimate song about her own sense of dislocation and the comfort she draws from her connection to nature. Her love for wildlife is clearly shown here and with rippling guitar lines and swooping vocals you can almost feel the song soaring across the Welsh hills.
Recorded in Red Kite studios, Carmarthenshire by award-winning producer Martin Levan, Pied Flycatcher fledged with a successful tour in RSPB reserves across the UK, which won her a 5-star review in The Scotsman. Kate also won an award for the most unusual venue for a folk gig, and will be continuing to perform in bird hides and intimate acoustic venues throughout the year.
